Pacific White-sided Dolphins
(Lagenorhynchus obliquidens)
|
This new baby Pacific white-sided dolphin is curious about the boat.
His mother and her protective core group are also curious but they are
too busy traveling. Some larger dolphin groups send out small units of
scouts, perhaps adult males, to search for prey and avoid predators.

The experienced leader of a dolphin group must know where to find
reliable food sources every day, and avoid predators and other hazards,
including humans. This group probably roams a home area of hundreds of
square miles on a never-ending search for food. Imagine being shadowed
for days by a hungry shark.
