Commerson's Dolphin
(Cephalorhynchus commersonii)
|
Commerson's dolphin and three related species all have restricted
ranges in the Southern hemisphere. Vividly colored, this species is
expensive to capture and maintain in captivity. One survivor of a
smuggled shipment of four dolphins confiscated enroute to Japan lived
many years at Mystic Aquarium. Although terribly deformed from the
cramped shipping box she was full of high spirit, often playing with if
not dominating larger dolphins sharing her tank.
